Since the fall of President Siad Barre in 1991, Somalia’s capital city of Mogadishu has been plagued with extreme levels of violence, carried out by various armed groups. In 2007 the United Nations Security Council approved the African Union Mission in Somalia’s (AMISOM) mandate which is to, among others, implement better national security.
Since then daily life has improved in the capital, but still suffers from regular attacks from Somalia’s Islamist terrorist group al-Shabaab.
